These works are inspired by the tradition of wallpaper designers or ‘paper stainers’ who worked in the vicinity at the turn of the century. Given the luxury residential setting of the commission and the fact that the work traverses the walls of the building, the wallpaper trade serves as an appropriate and unique theme for the artworks. Here the artwork ‘dresses’ the building in the form of wallpaper hangings, taking advantage of the double height entrance.
The pattern across the screens is inspired by a scroll motif which was typical of the work of these local 19th century designers. The project aims to be true to the original spirit of classical design whilst expressing a contemporary character.
